Dependency Determination

For the 2009-2010 academic year, you're considered an independent student ONLY IF at least one of the following criteria applies to you. If none of these criteria apply to you, you're considered dependent.
Were you born before January 1, 1986?
Will you be enrolled in a master's or doctoral degree program (beyond a bachelor's degree) at the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year?
Are you or will you be married (or separated but not divorced) as of the day you apply?
Do you have children who receive more than half their support from you? (dependent help)
Do you have dependents (other than your children or spouse) who live with you and who will receive more than half their support from you at the time you apply and through June 30, 2010? (dependent help)
As of the date you apply, will you be an emanicipated minor or in legal guardianship as determined by a court in your state of legal residence OR when you were age 13 or older, were both your parents deceased or were you in foster care or were you a dependent/ward of the court?
Are you a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces or currently serving on active duty for purposes other than training?
