License Information:

General Building Contractor
License Description:
All businesses or individuals who construct or alter any building, highway, road, parking facility, railroad, excavation, or other structure; perform construction zone traffic control, or perform work on or calibration of monitoring equipment for underground storage tanks, must be licensed.

Class A: General Engineering Contractor whose principal business is in connection with fixed works requiring specialized engineering knowledge and skill, including irrigation, streets and roads, parks, excavating, etc.

Class B: General Building Contractor whose principal business is in connection with structures built for support, shelter, and enclosure of persons, animals, chattels, or movable property.

Class C: Specialty Contractor whose construction work requires special skill and whose principal contracting business involves the use of specialized building trades or crafts. Manufacturers are considered contractors if they engage in on-site construction, alteration, or repair.

Fees: Application: $250
Initial license: $150
Re-examination: $50

Examination Frequency: Computerized exams given daily.

Exam Locations: 8 sites throughout the state.

Experience Requirement: 4 years experience out of the past 10 at journeyman level or better in the classification sought; must be at least 18 years of age.

Average Time to Process Application: 3-6 weeks.

Renewal Period: 2 years active: $300
4 years inactive: $150

Authority: Business and Professions Code, Section 7000 et seq.
California Code of Regulations, Title 16, Chapter 8.

Special License Requirements: Licensees who engage in asbestos-related work, hazardous substance removal, or home improvement work must be certified by the CSLB and contractor sales representatives must be registered with the CSLB.
